Why did God test Abraham? (Gen 22:1-19)

Gen 22:1-19 I must admit that this passage used to strike fear in my heart (and still does to some extent). Coming from a Christian background where obedience was emphasised above all, this incident in Abraham’s life always evoked for…

    God’s sustaining faithfulness (Gen 21:22-34)

Gen 21:22-34 A number of Christians I know have given up well-paid jobs, sometimes at prestigious companies, to do Christian ministry of some sort. As a result, they often lost status within the secular world, as well as financial security.…

  • Bible reading notes,  Gen 12-25 (Abraham),  Genesis,  Topical,  Un-chosen: Is God unfair?

The chosen and the unchosen – is God unfair?

Gen 21:15-21; Deut 9:1-7 A prominent question in Genesis is election or who is chosen by God. Throughout the book, some like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are chosen, others like Ishmael and Esau are not. This is not unique to…

The truth about God’s people (Gen 21:1-14)

Gen 21:1-14 As a teenager attending Bible study, I soon began to wonder if I were a Christian. I grew up in a Christian home, we went to church as a family. What was I missing? Was I really missing…

When God’s grace overrides sinful choices (Genesis 20)

Gen 20:1-18 A dear friend of mine is notorious for standing me up on occasion. We agree on a time and place, I duly turn up and wait and wait with my friend nowhere in sight. Apparently, it only happens…

Choosing between a wasted and a meaningful life (Gen 19:27-38)

Gen 19:27-38 Efforts today to share the gospel are often focused on getting people through the door of salvation. Once a person’s eternal fate is secure, everything else is judged a bonus. Not surprisingly, young Christians often lack basic discipleship…

    No turning back (Gen 19:23-26)

Gen 19:23-29 In my twenties, on a retreat with a youth group, I remember a conversation two of us leaders in the group had with a teenage boy who was drawn to the Christian faith. He wanted to make a…

A life of compromise (Gen 19:1-22)

Gen 19:1-22 I used to know a Christian couple who were pillars in my church. Newly married at the time, they were leading Bible studies and demonstrated a thoughtful Christian commitment. Over time, our lives moved in different directions and…

What difference do we make in this world? (Gen 18:16-33)

Gen 18:16-33 Memorial services often make me feel humbled. A dearly loved person is remembered by relatives and friends, events are fondly recalled, quirky habits draw an affectionate laugh from those who knew him or her. Achievements are recounted, a…

Can God work through us despite our limitations? (Gen 18:1-15)

Gen 18:1-15 On a summer placement as a student, I encountered a young man who was leading worship during our team sessions in the morning. Though a gifted musician and a godly person, he had the most incapacitating stammer, and…

About Me

Hi, I’m Csilla!

Labradorite is a gemstone that, like Scripture to some, looks grey and lifeless until the light is diffracted from its internal layers to show a beautiful iridescence. As an Old Testament scholar, I write to help draw out Scripture’s colours by sharing practical insights and a deeper knowledge of God’s Word.
